3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet 9100 FX with Side Windows and Auto Darkening Filter is a flip-up combination of an auto-darkening welding helmet and a protective visor. This system helps provide professional-grade eye and face protection from debris and harmful radiation including visible light, ultra-violet radiation (UV), infra-red radiation (IR), and sparks and spatter. The helmet offers a large viewing area and side windows with shade 5 filters increase your peripheral field of vision. A spark- and spatter-resistant headcover is also standard on all 3M Speedglas Welding Series 9100 FX Helmets. While offering high-level protection, this welding helmet also delivers on comfort, which helps to boost on-the-job worker satisfaction and productivity. For professional welders, this welding helmet is a good investment that can pay off with greater service and satisfaction.
Auto Darkening Filter Reacts Quickly After Striking an Arc The Speedglas lens features user-selectable dark shades 5, 8, 9 through 13, and a light shade of 3. With a viewing area of 2.1 inches high x 4.2 inches wide (54 mm x 107 mm), the 9100X provides the second largest viewing area available in the 9100 Series helmets, and an improved field of view that helps the welder to see the work in progress with minimal obstruction.
Three sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck. The lens then switches from light to dark shade in approximately 0.1 milliseconds (1/10,000 of a second), giving the welder an instant transition from light to dark shade while maintaining an optimal view for torch placement and weld puddle control. When the weld is complete, the filter automatically returns to light shade 3 with a delay of approximately 40-250 milliseconds, allowing almost immediate inspection of the weld pool and preparation for the next weld. Exhaust vents readily direct your exhaled air out of the helmet, helping to reduce heat, humidity and fogging of the welding filter and protective visor.
The auto darkening filter reduces the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which can boost productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature also can reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of electronic placement. This, in turn, can also reduce the need for grinding and rework, saving time, effort and money. The helmet’s battery life is approximately 2,500 hours. The two Cr2030 3V lithium batteries that power the Auto-Darkening filter are easily accessible and replaceable, extending the helmet life.
Flip-up design eliminates the need to remove the helmet for non-welding tasks Designed for ultimate worker convenience, this welding helmet allows you to position the auto darkening filter down for welding and flip it up for other tasks. When the auto darkening filter is flipped up, eyes and face are still protected from debris, chips, dust, sparks and other objects by a clear protective visor, which is curved to maximize peripheral vision. You get a clear, 8” x 4.25” (17 x 10 cm) view, which is enables for precision grinding and inspection in low light conditions. This wide field of view allows workers to see better and maintain high productivity on the job. Convenience is a main benefit of the flip-up welding helmet because it allows workers to handle non-welding tasks without removing the helmet or supplementing an additional face shield. For added worker protection, a spark- and spatter-resistant fabric head cover is standard on all 3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet Series 9100 FX models.
Welding Protection with Excellent Optics, Wider Front Views and Side Windows The 3M™ Speedglas™ Auto-Darkening Filters Series 9100 offers uniform shading and minimal distortion across the entire filter viewing area. By selecting the right setting for each task, you help reduce eye strain and improve the quality of every weld. Any shade can be “locked-in.” For example, you can lock in the light state shade 3 for grinding. The 9100 series also includes an exclusive, innovative “tack welding comfort mode” which can help reduce eye strain.
One Helmet Works for Three Types of Welding This fully assembled welding helmet with ADF (Auto Darkening Filter) offers sensitivity adjustments for use with most Stick (arc welding), MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding applications. The welding helmet uses an auto darkening filter that can be adjusted for different shades based on the welding amperage.

- Two adjustable crown straps for increased stability and weight distribution

- Snap adjustment of nine different helmet angles
- Large knobs for simple adjustment of “prep” and “parking” pivot positions, even while wearing gloves
- Fits head sizes 6.25 to 8 (50 to 64 cm) approximately
The outside of the human head is lined with nerves, arteries, and acupuncture points: applying pressure to some of these spots can make a person feel fatigued. The headband of the Speedglas welding helmet series 9100 is designed to specifically avoid these vulnerable areas. By providing multiple adjustments and combinations, the helmet can be tailored to fit personal preferences and comfort settings. Less pressure, ¬ and a well adjusted personal fit – means more comfort, all day long.
The helmet also offers greater comfort when raised. Lifted into the raised position, the helmet’s “high point” is lower than many other helmets. From a design standpoint, that means keeping the helmet as close as possible to your head. Because the helmet is more balanced, the headband does not need to be tightened as much, helping to further increase wearing comfort. Adjustment of the helmet is easy. The smooth up-and-down pivot action can be “locked” in the up position – a light pull lowers the helmet back down again.
Versatile Eye and Face Protection for Welders Welding helmets help protect the eyes and face in numerous ways. For starters, the helmet helps to block welding sparks and spatter from reaching the eyes and face. The helmet also helps protect the eyes from exceptionally bright light and rapid changes in brightness, which can both stress and harm eyes. Without protection, eyes can be temporarily or permanently injured by the intensity of light produced by welding. Eyes also have difficulty adjusting to rapid brightness changes while welding in dark locations, which can be both a productivity and safety issue. The helmet’s design allows for compatibility with select disposable welding respirators, including the 3M™ 8515, 8212, 8214, 8512, and 8514 Particulate Welding Respirators, to help provide respiratory protection for applications where metal fumes may be present. This durable and versatile welding helmet also meets the requirements of CSA Z94.3 and the high impact requirements of ANSI Z87.1-2010.
